Massive Changes in Tweets from @BorderObserver
TL;DR
Less tweets from the Search Engine on a daily basis, more tweets from press releases.
Some Context
Some of you that have been around awhile know @borderObserver is an effort to make a workstation for news reporters. The first effort was to make a system whereby the basis for most news reporting was catalogued and reported on. To be clear, the "first effort" was to report on the latest press releases.
Why? because that is where 90+% of all news starts from. The days of on-the-ground of gumshoe reporting are mostly gone. By all logically means, having a groud news reporter show up for a "local news briefing" — even for a city council meeting — is too expensive. As such, now-a-days reporters show up and take the printed press release. And in many such cases, they just gather the online press release via newsletters.
I want to make this very clear. No actual person shows up for a "local news briefing." Unless, the "briefing" is extra-ordinarily important - reporters just don't show. On top of that, the days of $80,000 "news vans" for local news stations are numbered.
Lastly, as was blogged a few days back, many many local news outlets are doing a poor job of passing along press releases.
With all that context out of the way, here is what is going to happen.
What' Happening Starting Today
Today, Tuesday February 25 2025 is the last day for the majority of the tweets coming from the Search Engine results page.
Tomorrow, a limited number of tweets will come from the Search Engine results page. With each passing day, press releases will start to replace news stories from local outlets. However, the Search Engine results page will still be updated daily -- just after midnight. In addition, more sources will be added to the Search Engine. We will also add location information for the news source.
Tomorrow, we will be working on getting the press releases -- specifically for immigration issues from the DOJ's USAO (U.S. Attorney's Office), the USCG (U.S. Coast Guard), the CBP (Customs and Border Protection), the USBP (U.S. Border Patrol), the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and many many others.
Before we started the search engine, we were already gathering the press releases. The difference is now we will apply the same process for selecting news stories via headlines.
Again, this will start tomorrow.
As always, you can check our Search Engine results page HERE
